The British racer, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout set to begin at the evening session. The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the only driver to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at corner four during the early running. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before sliding over the escape zone, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the wall. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver.
