Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
